Digital Works, Meet Physical Form

Robert Yarger is truly an artist that has turned his passion for puzzles and woodworking into a full time career.    As a wooden piece, it is beautiful and artistic.  As a puzzle, it is mystifying and scientific.  By puzzles, I don’t mean your typical wooden jigsaw puzzles.  I mean mechanical moving parts, gears, pulleys, and counter weight balances.  I mean complicated and intricate wooden pieces that must be moved in a very specific pattern in order to open secret compartments.

Robert states, there are “no other tools in my woodshop that will produce these mechanical parts out of wood like the CarveWright.”  Quickly realizing the importance of this new tool, Robert ordered a second as a backup.  He happily adds that he has only had to use it once.  “What impressed me the most is how rugged it is. “  Robert bought his CarveWright a year ago and estimates, “I would have burned through 2 or 3 routers and a table saw by now, but it just keeps going and going.”

Robert creates his puzzles and then sells them every three months online at www.cubicdissection.com, a website which he shares with other puzzle artists.  All of these pieces are limited editions, signed and dated by the artists.  His pieces generally sell out with in 5 to 10 hours of being posted.  According to Robert, the CarveWright paid for itself within his first two sales from the site.  “It actually paid for itself, just in the amount of time it saves me,” claims Robert.  “It is a great asset.”

Robert Yarger, his wife and son are residents of Edmond, OK.  Robert is a featured artist in the Dutch released hardback edition of famous historian, collector & author Jerry Slocum’s “The Ultimate Puzzle Book:  The Best Puzzles in the World.” Robert has original pieces in England’s James Dalgety Puzzle Museum (www.puzzlemuseum.com) and the James Strayer Gallery at www.lhup.edu/jstratyer/gallery.htm.  His works can also be found listed under the names of Roby Charles, Stickman Boxes or Stickman Box Company.  He not only competes yearly in international puzzle competition, but along with fellow mechanical puzzle artists is coordinating an Amateur Puzzle Design Competition.  He encourages other CarveWright users and puzzle artists to enter.  More information for this event will be listed online at www.cubicdissection.com by mid-April.
