A New Era of CNC Design: AI Meets Carving

This custom CNC light switch cover represents a major shift in how intricate woodworking designs are created. Built using Generative AI for CNC, this project showcases how advanced technology can dramatically reduce design time while achieving highly detailed, organic results.

Traditionally, a design with this level of dense, overlapping detail would require days of 3D modeling or expert-level hand carving. By integrating AI into the workflow, the process becomes faster, more accessible, and highly scalable—opening the door for more creators to produce complex relief carvings with ease.

Project Overview

This CNC project files were prepared and optimized for carving in a few ways to create some options.

  • Designed to fit standard light switch boxes
  • Includes multiple variations for different material thicknesses
  • Optimized with carve regions and piercing techniques for clean results
  • Adjustable design elements to accommodate real-world hardware variations

One file includes a rear pocket cut to allow clearance for switch hardware.

  • Default pocket depth: 1/8”
  • Recommended adjustment: 1/16” to avoid overly thin material in certain areas

Always check your specific light switch plate before carving to ensure proper fit.

Carving The Project

This project is optimized for manual placement using the Universal RAVEN Jig.

The featured carve was completed using Select Pine, which provides a clean cut and highlights fine detail well.

The combination of AI-generated geometry and CNC precision results in a highly textured, organic surface that would be extremely difficult to achieve manually.

Finishing Process

To bring out the depth and character of the design, follow this finishing workflow:

1. Cleanup

  • Remove tabs using a small hand saw
  • Sand edges smooth
  • Use a 240 grit sand mop for surface finishing
  • Clean intricate areas with radial brushes on a rotary tool

2. Staining

  • Apply Dark Walnut stain for a deep, rich tone
  • Lightly sand select areas with a radial brush to reveal highlights
  • This technique creates a unique aged brass or weathered forest effect

3. Protective Coating

  • Finish with a Satin Clear Enamel spray
  • Provides durability while maintaining a natural, low-sheen look
